Maihi Nikora
Kia ora koutou,
Inakä taku koha....
Maihi Pokipoki Huruhuru Nikora

Pepeha-ä-iwi:

‘He maihi wharetü ki te pärae, he kai nä te ahi tauä, he mianga nö ngä kuri o te riri. Ëngari he maihi wharetü ki te pä tuwatawata o Tahatü ki te Rangi nö Kahutia-Te-Rangi - Paikea, he tohu nö te rangatira!'

Tribal Aphorism:

'A decorated meeting house built upon the open plains, is food for the fires of war parties, and urinals for the dogs of war. However, the decorated meeting house constructed within the sanctuary of Kahutia-Te-Rangi Paikea's palisades - are the emblems of Ariostocracy.'

Maihi Nikora is a mokopuna of Te Kooti's Rebels from Tairäwhiti, born in Ngäti Pikiao - Te Arawa, he is of Rongowhakaata - Mähaki - Kahungunu - Tahupötiki extract on his dads side Marsh Tütänekai Nikora. His mother is of Tüwharetoa - Ati Haunui-ä-Päpärangi - Tühoe - Tamaköpiri extract.

Maihi is a country man's man, being raised in the bush, on farms from Tauranga to Taupö, across to Tairäwhiti and Te Waipounamu.

He's been a fully licensed Maori land court interpretor since 1987, and has translated for Waitangi Tribunal hearings in the Auckland region.

He's had a colourful life as a professional broadcaster for 20 years and paved the way for many in both Maori radio & Maori television as a senior reporter, producer, journalist and live on air presenter.

He's produced 3 tama and 4 tamähine from 3 Päharakeke, alongside 4 tamariki whängai - his eldest daughter Rümätiki is 28, whilst his youngest son Türoa Te Kani-ä-Takirau is 4. This stems from his great love of children and his belief that they are the key to empowering Maoridoms' positive future, hence his vision for Te Pä o Manurewa -
‘To empower the Mätätahi (Youth), is to empower the Pä (whole complex), the Häpori (community).'

Maihi walks comfortably in every church service, he is actually a staunch advocate for Karakia Tawhito (Ancient Maori Rituals). He also has an empathy for the Hähi Ringatü (his grandfather Huruhuru Nikora's influence), Rätana (his dad was baptised by Tahupötiki Wiremu Rätana and became an Apötoro in 1980 - and was named Te Taina o Hämuera Nikora). Paimärire was through his mothers tipuna - Te Püreti Hïtauä, the youngest daughter of Te Pëhi Türoa - a staunch supporter and protector of King Potatau Te Wherowhero & King Täwhiao. Maihi was educated at the Mihingare school of Te Aute College in Hawke's Bay, and even though his mother was a practicing Mormon, she became a staunch follower of Rätana's teachings.

Maihi has also been a tutor of Maori Martial Arts for over 30 years, being one of the 2 surviving Pou-kaiora (Ritual and Cultural Expert) of Te Waka Änaunaua ä Te Irirangi Tiakiawa. He has trained many people locally, nationally and internationally in ‘mau räkau' as well as prepared many kaumätua for the responsibilities of the paepae, kuia for karanga, both for möteatea (ritual songs, dirges, pätere, manawa wera & tribal haka), ringawera for käuta, hutihuti rarauhe (picking bracken fern with his kuia mau moko Keita Te Moetahi) in preparation for the moenga takapouwharanui (ancestral bedding for Chiefs of visiting hapu, iwi) to the modern day mattresses and bedding, as well kapa haka to entertain within the Whare Täpere.

"Kia tü Ariki ai tatou, më ohu, më kura."
To be a font of knowledge, one must edify his ancestral forebears.

Mauri Manawa Ora!
